Nostalgex questions, answered.

Do I need a media server to use Nostalgex?

Yes. Nostalgex is a front end for a library you already have on Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby. If you run one of those, you're two minutes from channel surfing.

Do I pick what plays on each channel?

No, and that's on purpose. Nostalgex reads your library and builds the channels and schedules itself. The surprise of "oh, this is on" is the product.

Is the web tuner really free?

Yes. Open it in a browser, connect your server, and watch. It needs a server reachable over HTTPS, so a plain LAN setup is an Apple TV app job. That is where the full living-room experience lives anyway.

Does my data go through Nostalgex servers?

No. Playback and sign-in happen directly between your device and your media server. We never see your credentials or your library.

Is Nostalgex open source?

Yes. The Apple TV app, the web tuner, this site and the channel rules are all on GitHub under the MIT license. It's the same code that ships to the App Store. Found a bug or a file that won't play? Open an issue there. Want your own channel lineup? Fork it.

Holiday channels, an easier Jellyfin and Emby sign-in, and a lot of playback fixes

  • TIS THE SEASON grows to eight channels: MISTLETOE for cozy holiday romances, CHRISTMAS SPECIALS and KIDS CHRISTMAS TV with the Christmas episodes of your shows, and TURKEY DAY for Thanksgiving episodes. It shows up a week before US Thanksgiving, in time for TURKEY DAY.
  • SCREAM is eight channels and can stay on in any month: SLASHER, HORROR COMEDY, FOUND FOOTAGE and WORLD HORROR join. Plus MYSTERY BOX TV, CRINGE TV and A24. Channel ideas from @tydude001.
  • Retro mode looks more like an old TV, with scanlines in full screen too.
  • Pick Jellyfin or Emby and Nostalgex starts looking for your server on your network right away. If one answers, it goes straight to it, no list to pick from. FIND MY SERVER looks again, and TYPE AN ADDRESS is there if nothing answers.
  • The first time, your Apple TV asks whether Nostalgex can look for devices on your local network. Say no and you can still type your server's address.
  • On Jellyfin with Quick Connect switched on, the code is on screen as soon as your server is found. Approve it in Jellyfin on your phone or computer and you are in, with nothing to type. Signing in with a password is one press away.
  • If your server shows its users on its login screen, as Emby does out of the box, Nostalgex shows them too. Pick your name instead of typing it. A user with no password is signed in on that press.
  • Nostalgex checks the address before you type a password, so a wrong address tells you right away.
  • Closing the keyboard takes you to the next step.
  • On every connect screen the button the remote is on is easy to spot from the couch: a bright cyan bar that grows a little. Text boxes are dark with a cyan frame, so what you type stays readable.
  • Ratings from outside the US count like their US equivalents. On a Jellyfin or Emby server with UK ratings, films and shows rated U and PG now fill the kids and family channels, while 15 and 18 stay off them and wait until 9 PM on VHS VAULT. German FSK ratings and a few other countries work the same way.
  • Films with Blu-ray 7.1 audio that wouldn't start, like The Wild Robot, play now.
  • Jellyfin Quick Connect works on Jellyfin 12. Thanks to @tydude001 for spotting it.
  • On Emby, tuning into a film part way through keeps the sound in sync with the picture. 4K HEVC files can still drift.
  • Jellyfin and Emby no longer burn subtitles into the picture, which re-encoded the whole film. Forced subtitles in your language still show.
  • Dolby Vision profile 5 from Jellyfin shows the right colours. On Emby those files are left off channels, since Emby sends them green and purple.
  • TOON TOWN no longer airs The Hobbit.
  • RATE opens the Nostalgex page in the App Store.
  • Your server's collections of TV shows now become channels too, not just collections of movies.
  • Report Playback is now two switches: SHOW NOW PLAYING and MARK WATCHED. Use either one on its own. Thanks to @w6trp.
  • PLAYBACK INFORMATION at the bottom of the Now Playing panel shows how the current programme is playing and why it fell back, which makes a not-playing report much quicker to sort out. Thanks to @w6trp.
  • Channel changes during a stall can no longer let an old stream take over the new channel. Thanks to @w6trp.
  • A Plex library with a file or folder name in an old text encoding loads again instead of stopping with an unexpected data error.
  • A channel where nothing will play stops after five tries and says so, instead of retrying forever.
  • Emby's backup stream works, and stalled Jellyfin and Emby streams recover by asking the server again.
  • Channels no longer go dark for the last hour of the day when the clocks go back, and the day after they go forward no longer reruns what aired the day before.
  • The app sends far fewer anonymous usage signals.

Franchises, iCloud sync, tips, and big libraries that stay put

  • FRANCHISES finds the film series in your own library, from Star Wars to American Pie, and gives each one its own channel with its own switch in Settings.
  • Your Plex collections still become channels, now filed as FRANCHISES or OTHER COLLECTIONS. NOTABLE STARS is gone: actor and director sets move to OTHER COLLECTIONS, and series like John Wick and The Hunger Games are filed as franchises.
  • iCloud sync, off until you turn it on in Settings under CONNECTION. Every Apple TV on your Apple ID then shares the same lineup and settings, and a new TV takes the lineup you already have.
  • REPORT PLAYBACK shows what you are watching in Now Playing and counts a real watch, and never fills your Continue Watching row. Thanks to @w6trp for the Plex heartbeat it is built on.
  • Plex films with more than one version, or split across several files, play the right version and start in the right part. Thanks to @w6trp.
  • More channels fill up: titles are matched against TMDB and IMDb data, which fills channels that used to come up empty.
  • A tip jar in Settings: Popcorn, TV Dinner and Pizza Night, as many as you like. A tip is just a thank you. Paid through your Apple account.
  • Very large libraries no longer crash right after the guide appears. The app now saves your library in small pieces in the background, so a library of several hundred thousand titles opens from the saved copy next time instead of scanning from scratch.
  • Plex films keep their full titles. A title cleaner meant for music videos was trimming every film with a dash in its name, so Star Wars: Episode I showed as The Phantom Menace and Spider-Man as Man, and those films were missing from channels that look for them by name.
  • Jellyfin: MP4 files saved with an .mkv name now play, and the backup stream works on new Jellyfin servers.
  • Settings is easier to find your way around: PLAYBACK holds picture, quality, subtitles and audio, and CONNECTION holds your servers and sync. A package shows BUILDING while its channels come in.
  • A small banner after a few long watches asks for a star rating. RATE takes you to the App Store and Back brings you right here. It asks once, and never again after you rate.
  • Channel line ups are tidier: whole film series no longer land on channels outside their genre, and real musicals stay on MUSICALS.
  • Thanks to @w6trp: saved playback diagnostics no longer keep server tokens, and music videos from two servers no longer get crossed.

Halloween, Christmas, eleven new channels, and a guide that keeps up

  • Channel numbers have changed. Every package is now one unbroken run: NOSTALGEX 1 to 19, PRIME TIME 40 to 54, TIS THE SEASON 130 to 136, SCREAM 137 to 140. Music videos move to 200 and up. Packages used to have channels scattered across the lineup, and this leaves room for each one to grow without landing on another.
  • SCREAM arrives for October: FRIGHT NIGHT, SCREAM ADULTS, SCREAM KIDS and a new NOSTALGEX HORROR for 70s, 80s and 90s horror. The guide offers it rather than switching it on, nothing joins your lineup until you say yes, and saying no means it waits until next year. While it runs it sits at the top of the guide, with the kids channel first.
  • TIS THE SEASON is ready for December with seven channels. HOLIDAZE for everything, SANTA'S LIST for the kid-safe films, NAUGHTY LIST for the grown-up ones, NOSTALGEX CHRISTMAS for anything before 2000, HALLMARK for the TV movies, and two television channels: CHRISTMAS SPECIALS and KIDS CHRISTMAS TV, which find festive episodes of shows you already have by looking at the episode titles.
  • Both seasonal packages can be switched on any month of the year from Settings. The month only decides when the guide offers it and when it jumps to the top.
  • Four more channels elsewhere. HISTORY & BIO picks up the biopics and history films that only ever surfaced as new additions. DVD SHELF, Y2K COMEDY and Y2K SITCOMS cover 2000 to 2009, which the retro channels stopped short of. MILLENNIUM CARTOONS is now Y2K TOONS and sits with them on 19.
  • FRONT LINE is a war channel again. It was matching on words like battle and soldier without checking the genre, so Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Sound of Music were turning up between the war films.
  • HIGH ROTATION was asking for music videos from 1980 to 1999, and most libraries date them from whenever the file was made, so it was always empty. It now takes everything, and Y2K and CURRENT SPIN split the rest by era.
  • Music video channels fill in. Genres come from Deezer when the server has none, and the year is read from the filename instead of a server date that is usually just the day the file was added, so Y2K and CURRENT SPIN sort by the right decade.
  • Channels built into the app can no longer be replaced by collections found on your server. If you had collections turned on, a channel could be quietly taken over and show something unrelated.
  • Changing channels plays what the guide says. Tuning into a channel partway through a programme could start that programme from its first frame, or play the next one from the beginning. Jellyfin servers hit this on nearly every channel, because Jellyfin refuses a start time on a segment request. The app seeks on its own now, the way Jellyfin's own web player does.
  • Films where the server re-encodes both the video and the audio no longer lose the picture about 24 seconds in on tvOS 26. The app was asking Plex to adjust quality mid-stream, and that adaptive mode hands back segments slower than real time, which the Apple TV gives up on. Quality stepping is the app's own job now.
  • A stream the server cannot keep up with steps down to 1080p and carries on from where it was, instead of freezing on one frame or skipping to the next programme. A 4K file that transcodes slower than real time was doing both.
  • Dolby Vision films that Plex refuses to convert now play. When the server turns down the Dolby Vision colour space, the app asks once more for the same remux Plex's own Apple TV app gets.
  • The guide scrolls properly. Every channel's schedule was being rebuilt on the interface thread every thirty seconds, which froze scrolling for a moment each time, worst on Apple TV HD. That work now happens out of the way.
  • Jellyfin and Emby servers reached by hostname, VPN or Tailscale now connect over http. Only plain LAN addresses worked before, and everything else failed looking like the server was down. Typing just an IP finds port 8096, pasting the address from your browser cleans it up, and a failed connection says why.
  • Opening the app goes straight to your guide. If you were already signed in, the connect screen no longer appears first, and short waits show the logo instead of a progress bar with nothing to measure.
  • Settings now says how much of your library the app actually loaded, in titles, movies, episodes and shows. If that number looks far too small, that is worth telling us about, and it is a different problem from channels looking empty.
  • Settings also shows the last playback failure, under RESCAN LIBRARY. If something will not play, that line and the title count above it are what we need.
  • REWATCHABLES MOVIES and REWATCHABLES TV fill from Jellyfin and Emby play counts, the same way they already did for Plex. A title needs 3 or more plays.
  • Playback reporting works for Jellyfin and Emby too. It is still off until you turn it on in Settings, and a watch here only counts on your own server.
  • Audio follows the AirPlay speakers you already picked as the Apple TV's output.
  • From anywhere in the guide, Play goes full screen on what's already on. Menu jumps back to that channel, and again to leave the app. Settings is one press up in the package list, which is now wider and easier to read.

Channels play again

  • Fixed: many channels showed the tuning screen and never cleared, or played sound over a black picture. Anything your Plex server has to convert now starts in a couple of seconds on Apple TV running tvOS 26.
  • Fixed: flipping channels quickly, or the app retrying a stream, could get refused by the server. The app now asks the server first the way Plex's own players do.
  • Fixed: some HEVC MP4 files played audio with no picture. They now go through the server, which sends a version the Apple TV can show.
  • A file that opens but shows nothing now switches to the server stream instead of skipping the program.
  • Checked on both an Apple TV 4K and an older Apple TV HD against MKV, MP4, AVI, AV1, VC-1, 4K and HDR files: every file the server can serve played.

Stays signed in, opens instantly

  • Fixed: the app forgot your Plex sign-in after a force quit or restart. A fresh sign-in was never being saved (since May). Sign in once on this build and it sticks.
  • Fixed: every launch rebuilt the whole channel guide. The saved guide was never actually written on a real Apple TV, only in testing. Now the guide comes back instantly and refreshes quietly in the background.
  • Fixed: the Top Shelf on the Apple TV home screen never showed what's on now, for the same reason. It does now.
  • The 6-hour refresh asks your Plex server whether anything changed before rescanning. Nothing new, no rebuild. A full rescan still runs at least once a day.
  • Signing in again no longer discards the saved guide.
  • Tapping Connect retries a flaky plex.tv call and, if it still fails, says exactly why.
  • The connect screen shows a small diagnostic line. If you ever land there unexpectedly, a photo of it tells us what happened.
  • Settings text is bigger and brighter. Nothing under 20pt, subtitles at 80%, and the long explainers trimmed to one line.

You stay signed in

  • Fixed: the app could forget your Plex sign-in after a force quit or restart and drop you on the connect screen. Your sign-in is now stored in two places and never deleted by the app itself. Only Disconnect in Settings signs you out.
  • A missing server list no longer counts as signed out. The app re-finds your servers from plex.tv on the next load.
  • A refused request (401) no longer signs you out after repeated tries. You see what Plex said and decide.
  • Tapping Connect retries a flaky plex.tv call a few times and, if it still fails, tells you exactly why instead of a generic connection error.
  • If a device ever does lose a sign-in, the connect screen now says so with a code to report.

The same movie stops repeating itself

  • Fixed: a movie could air twice in a row with no gap on channels with a smaller lineup. Two separate causes, both fixed: one mid-day, one right at midnight.
  • TRUE CRIME was showing every documentary in the library, sports and music included. Now it is actually true crime.
  • R RATED COMEDY dropped a handful of prestige dramas that only technically counted as comedies.
  • Playback that silently went black and never recovered now gets caught and skipped.
  • Top Shelf logs more clearly when it has nothing new to show.

A premieres channel, and seven more

  • New PREMIERES channel. Anything you add to your server turns up here first, then settles into the rest of the lineup.
  • A newly added film used to premiere on every channel that carried it, all at the same time. It now premieres once, on PREMIERES.
  • Eight new channels: PREMIERES, MILLENNIUM CARTOONS, DREAMWORKS, TOON TOWN, SPY GAMES, MIRAMAX, R RATED COMEDY and SKETCH COMEDY.
  • Films tagged History were being blocked from every channel. Apollo 13, 12 Years a Slave and a dozen others have a home again.
  • Westerns on TV now have a channel, sci-fi horror shows up on SCI-FI, and SPORTS DOCS is no longer empty.
  • ROM COMS, DATE NIGHT, GIRLS NIGHT and TEEN MOVIES stop showing each other the same films.

What is on, from the home screen

  • What you are watching now shows up in Control Center and in the Remote app, with the channel and the poster.
  • Put Nostalgex in the top row of your Apple TV home screen and it shows what is on right now across your channels. Pick one and it tunes straight to it.
  • CRITERION was playing the wrong films. It now plays what it says it does.
  • Nine channels pull from a much bigger pool: BUDDIES, DATE NIGHT, RUSH, FRONT LINE, DRAMA TV, BIOPICS, FOREIGN FILMS, MIDNIGHT and CULT CLASSICS.
  • Channels stick to their own rules again, so cartoons stop turning up on SCI-FI.

Collections become channels

  • Your collections turn into channels. A collection on your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server now shows up as its own channel alongside the rest of the lineup.
  • Open in Plex sends whatever is playing straight into the Plex app.
  • New additions premiere at prime time, and films that come in two parts are scheduled back to back.
  • The lineup refreshes every six hours instead of once a day, so something you added today can turn up tonight.
  • Fixes: the bottom channel in the guide is selectable again, HEVC files no longer black screen on the Apple TV HD, multi-part movies on Jellyfin and Emby play straight through, and a library scan that gets interrupted keeps what it already loaded instead of starting over.

Faster loading, and a Now Playing panel

  • Big libraries load a lot faster, and the loading screen tells you what it is actually doing the whole way through instead of parking on one step.
  • Slow or flaky connections no longer take the app down with them. Loading and playback both keep going instead of hanging.
  • New Now Playing panel while you watch. Closed captions, subtitle and audio language, stream quality, retro mode, and a sleep timer, all without leaving the program.
  • Open in Plex sends whatever is on straight into the Plex app.
  • Your sign-in sticks. No more getting kicked back to the connect screen after the Apple TV restarts.
  • Guide fixes: rows line up properly, the bottom channel is selectable again, and a program that ends quietly moves on instead of stalling.

Music videos, more channels, and playback upgrades

  • Music videos work now. Drop them in and they fill up HIGH ROTATION, plus a batch of new ones: Y2K, Current Spin, Dance Floor, Caliente, Headbangers, and Get Down. Even videos sitting in a regular movie library get picked up as long as they are tagged Music.
  • New channels: Cartoon Network, Record Store, and an Arthouse pack.
  • Pick your audio language. If a movie has more than one audio track, Nostalgex remembers the one you want.
  • Movies split across a couple of files play straight through now instead of stopping halfway.
  • Your server logins stick. No more re-entering Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby credentials after the Apple TV restarts or restores.
