Halloween Horror Channels

The Scream bundle. 8 channels, built from your own library.

October is the one month of the year where the guide should be mostly one thing, and this is the bundle that does it. It is not locked to October, though. Switch it on in March and it stays on.

Eight channels, split by how much you want to be scared and who is in the room. SCREAM KIDS is the spooky season shelf for younger viewers: the friendly ghosts, the cartoon monsters, the ones with a happy ending. FRIGHT NIGHT is the whole horror aisle, everything scary you own on one channel. SCREAM ADULTS is the end of the shelf you do not put on before the kids are asleep. NOSTALGEX HORROR is 1975 to 1999, box art that was scarier than the movie. SLASHER is the masked guy and the summer camp: Scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Chucky. HORROR COMEDY is for the nights you want to laugh at it too. FOUND FOOTAGE is the shaky camera stuff, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity, and it shows up once you own three of them. WORLD HORROR is everything that was not made in English: Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, the films people tell you to watch with the subtitles on.

It works best on exactly the night you want it to. Put SCREAM on, leave the Apple TV running, and the guide behaves like a channel that programmed a Halloween marathon without asking you for a list. People come and go, the schedule keeps running, and anyone walking in lands in the middle of something instead of staring at a menu while everyone waits.

Same rule as everywhere else in the app: these are your movies. Nostalgex reads the Plex or Jellyfin library you already own, sorts the horror into these channels, builds a schedule and starts playing mid film. If your horror shelf is thin, you will see fewer channels. If you have been collecting slashers for fifteen years, SLASHER will run for a week without repeating itself.

A nice thing about doing it this way: you stop rewatching the same three. Everyone has the Halloween picks they default to. A channel does not default. It digs out the one you bought on a whim in 2011 and never put on, and because it was already playing when you tuned in, you watch it.

The bundle switches on and off in settings like any other. Free, open source under the MIT license, Apple TV on tvOS 18 or later, Plex or Jellyfin.

Scream FAQ

Do I need my own horror movies?

Yes. SCREAM is built from the horror already on your Plex or Jellyfin server. Nostalgex schedules what you own and plays it back.

Is it safe to leave on with kids around?

SCREAM KIDS is the one for that: the spooky season titles rated for younger viewers. The rest of the bundle is not, so turn it on and tune to the kids channel, or leave the bundle off until bedtime.

Why is a channel missing?

A channel needs enough matching titles in your library before it turns on. Two found footage movies is not a channel. Add a third and FOUND FOOTAGE shows up on the next guide build.

Does the bundle turn itself off after Halloween?

No. SCREAM is off until you switch it on, it gets offered every October, and once it is on it stays on. Leave it on all year if you want horror in the guide in March.

Does it cost anything?

No. The app is free and open source under the MIT license.
