A Channel for Every Decade

The Decades bundle. 7 channels, built from your own library.

Decades is the bluntest bundle in the app and that is the appeal.

Seven channels: THE 60S, THE 70S, THE 80S, THE 90S, THE 00S, THE 10S, THE 20S. No genre, no mood, no clever grouping. One channel per decade, sorted by the year on the film, playing whatever you own from that stretch of time.

It is the bundle people use when they know exactly what they are in the mood for and it is not a genre. Some nights you do not want a comedy or a thriller, you want 1987. The lighting, the cars, the synth over the opening titles, the fact that everyone is wearing too much denim. A decade channel gives you that in a way a genre channel never does, because it mixes the action movie and the teen comedy and the made for TV thing you forgot existed, which is what actual TV did.

It is also the fastest way to find out what your library really is. Turn this bundle on and the shape of your collection shows up in the guide: four channels running all day and three that never appear. Most people are heavy in the 90s and 2000s and almost empty before 1970. That is useful to see.

The mechanics are the same as the rest of the app. Nostalgex reads the Plex or Jellyfin library you already have, sorts titles by release year into these seven channels, builds a real schedule and starts playing mid film. Nothing ships with the app and nothing streams from outside your own server. A decade with nothing in it does not get a channel.

One pairing worth trying: leave THE 80S or THE 90S on next to the retro bundle. The retro channels pick the nostalgic stuff, the warm end of the decade. The decade channel plays everything from those years, including the films nobody got sentimental about, and that is where you find the thing you have not seen.

Decades FAQ

How does a title land on a decade channel?

By release year, read from the metadata your server already has. A film from 1994 lands on THE 90S whether you added it last week or ten years ago.

Do I need my own movies and shows?

Yes. Nostalgex builds these channels from the Plex or Jellyfin library you own. It never supplies titles.

Why do I only have three of the seven channels?

A channel turns on once your library has enough titles from that decade to fill it. Most libraries are thick in the 90s and 2000s and thin before 1970, so the early channels are the ones that stay dark.

What is the difference between this and the retro bundle?

The Nostalgex bundle sorts by feeling: Saturday mornings, after school, the video shelf. Decades sorts by the calendar and nothing else, so a 1992 art film and a 1992 action movie sit on the same channel.

Does it cost anything?

No. The app is free and open source under the MIT license.
