Cult and Foreign Film Channels

The Arthouse bundle. 4 channels, built from your own library.

Arthouse is the small, deliberate bundle: four channels for the part of your library you are proudest of and watch least.

CRITERION gathers the releases from that collection you have been slowly buying. FOREIGN FILMS is world cinema, the subtitled shelf. MIDNIGHT is the late slot, the strange and the loud, the stuff that plays better at eleven than at seven. CULT CLASSICS is the films that flopped and then found everybody, the ones with the long second life.

This is where the whole idea earns its keep. Everyone owns a few films like this. Almost nobody puts one on, because picking a demanding film is a commitment you make before you know whether you have the energy for it. A grid of posters asks you to commit. A channel does not. The film is already running, you catch fifteen minutes of it, and either you are in or you flip on, and nothing was lost either way.

Done over a few weeks that quietly fixes the gap between the library you curated and the library you actually watch. The films stop being a shelf you walk past and start being something that is on.

It helps that the channels have a time of day to them. A midnight film at midnight is a different experience from the same film at four in the afternoon, and a schedule gives you that back. There is a reason the strange stuff always ran late.

The rules are the same as everywhere else. Nostalgex reads the Plex or Jellyfin library you already have, groups what is there into these four channels, builds a real schedule and starts you partway through. Nothing ships with the app and nothing comes from outside your own server, so CRITERION here means the ones you own, not a window into anybody's catalogue. Expect fewer channels than the bigger bundles: most libraries have a handful of titles at this end, and a channel waits until there is enough to fill it.

Pair it with a wider bundle so the guide has somewhere to go on a night nobody wants subtitles.

Arthouse FAQ

What channels are in this bundle?

Four: CRITERION, FOREIGN FILMS, MIDNIGHT and CULT CLASSICS. Each one fills from the matching titles in your own library, so a thin shelf shows fewer of them.

Do I need my own films?

Yes. These channels are built from the Plex or Jellyfin library you already own. Nostalgex schedules what is on your server and plays it back.

What is the difference between MIDNIGHT and CULT CLASSICS?

MIDNIGHT is the late slot: the strange, the loud, the ones that work best after eleven. CULT CLASSICS is the films that found their audience years after release, whatever time of day you watch them.

Do foreign films keep their subtitles?

Yes. Subtitle and audio track choices stick the way they do anywhere else in the app, so a channel of subtitled films behaves properly.

Why is a channel missing from my guide?

A channel turns on once your library has enough matching titles to fill it. This is the bundle where that happens most often, because most libraries are thin at this end.
